Jazz Concert: What Made the '20's Roar? The Music and Times of the Gatsby Era

Boston-based jazz group Made in the Shade will explore the early jazz that was the first truly American music.  In addition to the social and historical aspects of the time, you will learn about flappers, AABA song form, the blues, ragtime, boogie woogie, and Dixieland, and about a time in America when people began to discover their right to express themselves.  Among the tunes featured will be The Sheik of Araby, a song that was in the film The Great Gatsby, filmed partially in the Rosecliff ballroom.

Admission is free, but space is limited and advance registration is requested.

The Great Gatsby Winter Series lectures and events are part of a community-wide reading project with the Newport Public Library.  This project is funded, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program.
